Women in Ancient Egypt had equal rights with men
It was the Greek civilization of which we are heirs that submitted and ostracized women. Shame on them!
When Herodotus visited Egypt, he was shocked to see how women behaved. Unlike women in ancient Greece, Egyptian females had the same rights as men. They worked, received the same wage rations as men, got drunk, and could become powerful rulers.
Such behavior was completely unacceptable in ancient Greece, where women had no rights and had to obey the man who owned the house.
Ancient Greek women had to receive permission from the man to leave the women's quarters of the house, while the situation for women in Ancient Egypt was very different. In the land of the pyramids, women spent their days visiting markets and shopping, while husbands stayed at home doing common housework.
The ancient Egyptians saw the universe as a complete duality of Men and Women. When the Universe was born, there was a mutual relationship between gods and goddesses. The female gods were just as important as the male gods. It was therefore necessary to preserve the balance between gods and people and between the two sexes. The goddess Maat was responsible for maintaining balance.
Egyptian women could divorce if they weren't happier with their husbands. Wealthy Egyptian women could study and get a proper education, just like men.
Women and men received the same punishment for the same crime. The property was inherited through the woman's family, and the women were able to manage their land, their animals, and their own homes. Egyptian females could make wills and even choose which of their offspring to inherit.
The use of cosmetics was vital for men and women in Ancient Egypt. There were no differences between how men and women wore makeup.
Egyptian women could also become powerful pharaohs, but they were naturally challenged by their male and female rivals. Once a female has become a pharaoh, her duties were no different from male pharaohs.
A good example of a skillful and efficient female ruler is Pharaoh Hatshepsut, who brought prosperity to Ancient Egypt. Another important female ruler was Queen Nefertiti.
