VALKYRIES
CELESTIAL WARRIORS
In Norse mythology, Valkyries are iconic figures that represent strength, courage, and mystery. These divine warriors play a crucial role in selecting fallen warriors to take to Valhalla.
They were one of the few factions of warrior women from ancient lore recognized as having any power over the mortal realm. Known as beacons of strength, they descended from the sky garbed in the feathers of swans coated with sturdy, iron chainmail, their faces protected by helmets and their spears held aloft fearlessly. Upon the backs of their ethereal horses, they came from the heavens to the mortal realm, guttural cries at the back of their throats. When seen by the soldiers on the ground, both awe and terror would sweep the battlefield – their role was to determine the fate of fallen warriors.
Among them, thirteen Valkyries stand out for their unique stories and attributes.
1. SIGRUN, Queen of the Valkyries, although she does not appear to refer to herself as such. When Freya, the original Queen Valkyrie, lost her wings to Odin, Sigrún grudgingly took the position in her stead. Now she is free to reunite the Valkyries and attempt to stem the tide of the dead flowing into Midgard.
2. SKÖGUL is often depicted as a heroic figure, leading warriors to glory. Her role is fundamental in mythology, as she helps maintain order and balance between the world of the living and the dead.
3. GÖLL, whose name means "tumult" or "noise", is a vibrant and energetic figure. She is often associated with the excitement and effervescence of combat, choosing warriors who display exceptional zeal and passion in battle.
4. GUNNR aka Gunner, whose name means "battle", is often described as a ruthless figure on the battlefield, carefully choosing the warriors destined to join Valhalla. Her presence is synonymous with courage and strength in battle. She lives at Odin's Hidden Chamber along the shores of Thamur's Corpse and is often depicted riding wolves.
5. HILDR, whose name also translates as "battle" is known for her ability to resurrect those killed in battle and used it, for example, to keep the battle between Hedin and Högni eternal. She plays a crucial role in preparing the warriors for Ragnarök. Hildr is often depicted as a mysterious figure, endowed with supernatural powers related to life and death.
6. BRYNHILDR aka Brunnhilde, who was given the belt of the gods with the strength of 10,000 men and the dragon tooth sword that could cut any type of steel. Often considered the most famous of the Valkyries, is a central figure in many sagas. She is known for her exceptional strength and indomitable spirit. In some stories of hers, she even challenges Odin, which leads to her being imprisoned. Brynhildr is often depicted as a powerful warrior and leadership figure among the Valkyries.
7. GÖNDUL is associated with magic and sorcery. She is often seen as a wise advisor, who uses her hidden knowledge to guide warriors. Göndul represents the connection between the physical world of warriors and the spiritual realm of the gods.
8. HLÖKK, name linked to war and tumult. She is often associated with the impetuous and chaotic nature of combat. Hlökk is a figure that embodies the fury and intensity of battle, choosing those who stand out for their bravery.
9. HERFJÖTUR, whose name is linked to captivity, is a Valkyrie warrior. She is often depicted as an imposing figure on the battlefield, capable of immobilizing her enemies with her mere presence. Herfjötur symbolizes dominance and control in the chaos of war.
10. GEIRSKÖGUL is closely linked to Skögul. Her name, related to the spear, symbolizes precision and determination. She is often depicted as a strategic figure, choosing warriors who excel in the art of war.
11. RANDGRÍÐR, whose name means "shield against storms", is a protector of warriors. She is often seen as a defensive figure, protecting deserving warriors and guiding them to Valhalla. Her role is crucial in ensuring the safety and passage of the chosen souls.
12. REGINELEIF, the daughter of a god, serves the einherjar (warriors of Valhalla) in her hall. She is often associated with hospitality and caring for Viking warriors, ensuring that they are well prepared for Ragnarök. Reginleif symbolizes nutrition and renewal.
13. KARA, is known for her connections with ravens, important birds in Norse mythology. She symbolizes communication between worlds and is often seen as a messenger between gods and men.
Beyond their role as warriors and messengers, the Valkyries embody powerful symbols of transformation, courage and destiny. Each of the thirteen Valkyries described in brings a unique nuance to the complex landscape of Norse mythology, reflecting various aspects of life, death, and spiritual combat. These mythological figures are not just characters from ancient legends, they represent profound archetypes that continue to influence modern culture. In a world where women are systematically put to the test of their ambition, bravery and capacity for sacrifice, the Valkyries remind us of the importance of inner strength and determination.
