ELPSETH BEARD ~ Around the World on a Motorcycle
Elspeth Beard is a notable architect who has won several awards and prizes. In addition, she is gorgeous and was the first woman to drive a motorcycle around the world, solo, in 1982, riding a BMW R60 (600cm3). Ingenious, she added some boxes to her bike that allowed her extra gasoline and load capacity.
She left from London shipping her bike to New York and traveled through Mexico and Canada before dispatching the bike to Australia where she suffered an accident that hospitalized her for 2 weeks. From there she went to Singapore where she stayed for 6 weeks before entering Asia mainland.
In Thailand, she had a nasty crash when she hit a dog being assisted and cared by the dog's owners who fed her with that same dog (geeez).
She continued to roll to North India where she entered Pakistan following Turkey through which she entered Europe, which she crossed, arriving in London in 1984, two years after her departure from New York, and after having traveled more than 35,000 miles ( 56,000 km).
Her 2017 autobiography “Lone Rider” chronicles her amazing circumnavigation.
Amazing how a lonely girl dared to accomplish such a challenge in a world full of pirates, thieves, assailants, Talibans and other hardened machos.
We can only bow our heads and show our respect and admiration. She is an icon for all women.
