The recent transformation of Bruce Jenner to Caitlyn Jenner (on pic) opened up a new prospective on the transgendered community. In a big part of the population there is the misconception that the so called “she males” are only occupied in either the adult movies industry or in the escort/prostitution industry. But in reality, this is not the case. For most transgendered persons, their life is a constant fight to overcome taboos and scepticism from the local societies. Some have managed to establish themselves as a “normal” person. The term is used to indicate that they have been accepted and are treated as any other member of the society.
However, there are quite a few, who have managed not only to overcome the taboos and become prominent members of the local or even international society. Some examples are:
Laverne Cox, best known for her role as Sophia Burset on the hit
Netflix show "Orange Is the New Black," was the first transgender person to ever be nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award. And in 2014, she became the first openly transgender person to ever be featured on the cover of Time magazine.
Lana Wachowski, jointly directed such films as the Matrix trilogy. She
transformed in 2012. In addition to directing many notable films with her younger sibling, Lana is also a screenwriter, producer and comic book publisher. For instance, she wrote and produced the film "V for Vendetta".
Andreja Pejić, Australian model notable for a number of reasons. For starters, she is a supermodel that was discovered at the age of 17 who has walked the runway for a number of high fashion giants, including Marc Jacobs and Jean-Paul Gaultier.
Lea T. After growing up in Italy, she was discovered by Riccardo Tisci, the Creative Director of Givenchy, and went on to be his muse. In 2014, she was selected to be the face of Redken, making her the first openly transgender model to front a global cosmetics brand. Then in 2015, Forbes magazine named her one of the 12 women who changed Italian fashion.
Jennell Jaquays is an American game designer and artist of table-top role-playing games (RPGs) and video games.
Jom Bagulaya is from the Philippines and became the first transgender to be elected as a City Councilor in Tacloban City.
Allyson Robinson is an American LGBT rights activist and became the first executive director of OutServe-SLDN, following the merger of OutServe and Servicemembers Legal Defense Network in October 2012.She was the first transgender person to ever lead a national LGBT rights organization that does not have an explicit transgender focus.
Marci Lee Bowers is an American gynaecologist who operated a surgical practice in Trinidad, Colorado.
Eden Lane is the first (and as of 2012 the only) openly transgender person in mainstream television broadcasting in the United States. In 2008 she became the first openly transgender journalist to cover a major political event for PBS (namely the Democratic National Convention). She is now the host of In Focus with Eden Lane on Colorado Public Television, which began airing in 2009.
Vladimir “Vladi” Luxuria is an Italian actress, writer, politician and television host. Luxuria was a Communist Refoundation Party member of the Italian parliament, belonging to Romano Prodi’s L'Unione coalition. She was the first openly transgender Member of Parliament in Europe, and the world’s second openly transgender MP after Georgina Beyer.
Well, and Georgina Beyer is a New Zealand politician and former Labour Party Member of Parliament. She was the world's first openly transsexual mayor, as well as the world's first openly transsexual Member of Parliament. She is also among a very small number of former sex workers to hold political office.
At last from this list, lovely Janet Mock is a writer, TV host, author of the New York Times bestseller Redefining Realness, contributing editor for Marie Claire, a transgender rights advocate, and the former staff editor of People magazine’s website. She has degrees from the University of Hawaii and New York University’s graduate school of journalism.
